This is a story song (all my songs are). .This song requires you to know the whole story . . .so here it goes . . .
I was playing at the Dutchess County Fair . . .It had been along week . . .I had a sign on my table which said . ."I love to play . . .All you have to do is ask . . ."
Well up walks an absolutely stunning lady dressed entirely in red. I had a hard time keeping my eyes under control . . .she even had red high heels on . . .The right amount of makeup . . .not cheap/or tawdry . . .just a very attractive woman . . .
She never spoke . . .she looked at me and smiled . . .slowly putting her hand on the sign . . .and smiled and said "Please"
I started to play her a song and you could see her relax and the stress of the day fall from her shoulders . . .After a few minutes her boy friend walked up behind her . . .I do not wish to insult anyone's ancestry here . . .but he had Fort Knox around his neck .. .talked with a very strong Brooklyn accent and he must have been hard of hearing because he talked extremely loud . . .
While I was playing he proceeded to tell his girl that these were Indian Peace Pipes . . .He had purchased one for his dad. . .You stuff it full of tobacco and light it up . . .it is hard to smoke . . .on account that you have to keep your fingers over the holes . . .It was for warriors and tough men only . . .Now the amazing thing here is I was playing the entire time he was telling his girlfriend this story . . .
I never took my eyes off the lady in Red . . .I was watching her eyes as he spoke and she began to softly cry . . .
Now I do not know his name . . . .I will call him Don Quido for this story . . . .as he started walking away . . .she stayed at my table and just stood there listening to me play . . .her eyes were now full of tears . . .Don Quido shouted back to her that he would gladly buy her a peace pipe if she wanted one . . .but that smoking was bad for her health . . . .With that her head dropped and she stared at the ground . . .then back up at me . . .A warm smile I will never forget shown through the tears . . .
".Come on Babe. . ." shouts Don Quido
As she left and walked down the hill she looked back over her shoulder at me as I continued to play . . .and she looked again until she was out of sight . . .
I remember thinking how beautifully sad she was . . . .what was such a beautiful sensitive woman doing with such a jerk . . .Well he did have a lot of gold . . .
As I stopped playing . . .I started to laugh . . .the mental picture of some old man in Brooklyn trying to smoke his flute was just too much for me . . . .
I wonder if he was a warrior . . .or just an Idiot like his son . . .
I have never seen the Lady in Red again . . .
